Holy Orders

The sacrament by which a man is ordained deacon, priest or bishop.

Understanding this sacrament

Through Holy Orders, a man is configured to Christ the priest and consecrated for the service of the Church. Three degrees: the diaconate (service), the presbyterate (priesthood), the episcopate (bishops, successors of the apostles). Ordination is conferred by the laying on of hands of a bishop.
